I couldn’t let today pass without wishing happy birthday to Carl Jung. Here is a great wee article from the BBC that does it very well.

We have a lot to thank Jung for;

  1. I have had the good fortune to have helped over a million people with their lives in some small way by sharing some of Jung’s discoveries.
  2. There are a bunch of people no longer in the wrong job because of what we do over at CareerPsychometrics.com And it’s all thanks to Jung
  3. There are a bunch of people who are a lot closer to discovering who they really are thanks to Jung.

He was a genius and caring and cool.

He helps us figure out the big stuff – “who am I?” and we are all the better for him doing so. We have a long way to go but I am truly standing on the shoulders of a giant – a great big friendly giant.

Happy Birthday Carl.

I thought I would have a look around and pick out some quotes from the great man himself. He wouldn’t be pleased at me calling him that as he was very informal and familiar with his patients and clients.

As far as we can discern, the sole purpose of human existence is to kindle a light in the darkness of mere being.

This is a pretty deep quote but it tackles head on the meaning of life. So many of us wrestle with this big question it’s good to know that we are not alone in doing so.

Children are educated by what the grown-up is and not by his talk.

I have to remind myself about this on a regular basis. It’s not easy being a dad, especially when your son knows most of your tricks. I have to play it straight these days and it’s tricky. So here’s to walking not talking. Here’s to dads all over.

Every form of addiction is bad, no matter whether the narcotic be alcohol or morphine or idealism.

As I get older I find myself increasingly irritated by idealists and fanatics. I find more people fit into my “fanatic” bracket every day. People that I would have considered mainstream a few years ago I now see as intolerant and fanatical. Maybe I am too much of an idealist myself?
