Let’s speak frankly. The two questions I get asked all the time are “Should I cheat in my personality test?” and “How do I cheat in my personality test?”
I can hear you gasp in horror but let’s face it, we are talking about a lot of money here. We are talking about your salary. In surveys it is regularly reported that as many as 80% of CVs are found to contain untruths.
And are interviews any more honest? It’s a performance in an artificial environment and barely representative of who you are. If you behaved with your friends or family they way you do at an interview they would give you stick and wonder what was wrong with you.
So if most people are cheating to some extent in every other part of the recruitment process, why not cheat in your personality test?. . . . .Well let me tell you why.
Firstly it’s not a test. I know everyone calls it a “test” but it’s not. There are no right or wrong answers. There is nothing you can do to practice, there is no swatting to be done. You are who you are. Your personality is a bit like your nose; you’re stuck with it. Sure you can put a bit of make-up on it but at the end of the day it’s still the big hooter at the front of your face that keeps your glasses up.
Besides they are really hard to cheat. How do you cheat in an exam when no one really knows what the right answer is? Sure you can give wrong answers but not sure that’s going to help you. And if you mess with it, the chances are you will be shooting yourself in the foot, both feet probably.
So my advice and the answer to your question is, “No, don’t. You can’t and if you try you’ll injure yourself or worse you will have to sit through interviews trying to remember whose nose you are wearing”.
