I receive email like this all the time, so I thought I would share my response.

I recently went for a job assessment and failed the assessment due to nerves, I did get an average result 50/99.

These are tests for well paid admin jobs.  Is there anything I can do to improve on the tests?  I did quite well in the customer service and data entry, it was just the aptitude and personality.   Customer service score I still could’ve done better.  I do think I’m doing well even to be selected.

I would be willing to pay a fee for these types of tests with questions with answers, or a course?.  If you don’t provide that is there another online company that can help me?  I can probably do really well in the tests if I can learn more.  It would also help me with the nerves to overlearn.

I’ve had 22 years work experience, and starting to feel that these tests are just games, and my 22 years work experience has been replaced by a stupid personality/aptitude test result, if that’s what they want, I just have to accept it.  However, I can understand companies testing for Customer Service, Data Entry, and typing.

I believe that many employers do not user personality profiling properly. The first thing you should know is that it is not a test. You can’t fail a personality test. There is no score of of 100. You are who you are and that’s a fine thing. Depending on what system the employer is using, they may have a personality type that they are looking for and you may not fit their plan. You cannot and should not manipulate your answers to try and meet their needs. For one it’s pretty much impossible and two, it will not serve you in the long run.

The best thing you can do is be familiar with your own personality type. Be comfortable with who you and know who you are. Make sure you are looking for a career that is compatible with your personality not just your skills set. Skills can be learned, personality cannot.

And if you keep getting told by employers that you have “failed” your personality test then you probably don’t want to be working there in the first place. Find somewhere that appreciates you and a work environment that is compatible with your personality. You deserve it.
